Apple iPhone sales hit 55 million over Christmas, analysts claim

Apple sold a colossal 55.3 million iPhones in the three months up to and over the Christmas period. That’s according to analysts, with the figure averaged from the estimates of 27 professional and 17 amateur tech watchers.

That number would be a record for the October to December quarter. Apple's current official best result for the period is 47.8 million iPhones shifted, which it recorded in the final three months of 2012.

It would also represent a major jump on the July to September stats. Apple sold a relatively paltry 33.8 million iPhones in that time, as the launch of its iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C approached.

The arrival of those two devices appears to have pushed sales up to record levels. Apple sold nine million units in the handsets’ opening weekend.

Cupertino is due to deliver its official quarterly results on January 27th. iPad sales are also expected to show sharp gains, following the debut of the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display.
