Google Nexus 8 on track for summer launch

Google will launch an 8–inch tablet this summer, as it looks to bolster sales of its slates after the critically–adored Nexus 7 failed to sell in significant numbers.

According to ‘upstream supply-chain sources’ cited by DigiTimes, the so–called Nexus 8 will be ready to roll in mid–2014. Specs are yet to be established, although the site's insiders indicate that Intel and Qualcomm are duking it out over who will supply the device’s chipset.

Asus looks to be in pole position to manufacture the Nexus 8, thanks to its already close relationship with Google. It has had success with both the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

Interestingly, the sources note that Google’s reasoning behind bringing a new mid-sized tablet to market centres on falling sales of its Nexus 7. With rival tablets, such as Amazon’s Kindle Fire, costing significantly less, the search giant has been unable to shift as many devices as it hoped.

Last year, images of a purported Nexus 8 appeared online in a Google promotional video. No word of the device had been heard since, until today.
