Samsung Galaxy S4 black edition incoming

Natty black editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and its junior sibling, the S4 Mini, have been unveiled. And rather smart they look too.

Both handsets are landing first in Russia, where the standard S4 will set you back about £400 SIM-free, with plans for a worldwide rollout later this year.

Although largely identical to the blue, white and pink variants of the S4 currently available in the UK, there are some subtle differences beyond the cosmetic respray.

Instead of a plastic black plate, the black S4 features a leatherette finish that’s not a million miles from the Note 3. And especially eagle-eyed smartfans will also note the homescreen has been tweaked and now features a matchy-matchy black background.

Otherwise, though, it’s business as usual. That means its spec sheet takes in a five-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080p HD resolution and 441ppi density and a rear-mounted 13-megapixel camera with HD video recording.

A quad-core processor is also on board, alongside a secondary two-megapixel front-facing snapper and 4G support. And for better or worse, Samsung’s suite of eyeball-tracking technology-based Android customisations, such as SmartScroll and SmartPause, are present and correct too.
