Google says it did not bid for WhatsApp

Google has denied it made a bid for WhatsApp, a week after the messaging company was bought out by Facebook in a colossal $19 billion (£11 billion) deal.

Speaking at Mobile World Congress, Google’s Android chief said: “We never made an offer to acquire [WhatsApp]. Press reports to the contrary are simply untrue.”

He went on to call WhatsApp an "exciting product" and admitted that the two companies had spoken in the past about working together.

Previous chatter had suggested the Mountain View firm had made a $10 billion offer, with a deal made whereby WhatsApp would inform it of any other takeover bid.

Facebook is hoping its huge investment will allow it to access new users in developing territories.

WhatsApp already has almost 500 million users worldwide, with plans to grow that number using the social network’s massive marketing clout.
