iWatch: Apple hires medical monitoring specialist

Apple has hired a specialist in medical monitoring, fuelling rumours that its forthcoming iWatch will be focused on serving up real time information about users’ wellbeing.

Marcelo Maline Lamego started work at Apple in the New Year. He has a role on one of the Cupertino company’s research and development teams, most likely working on both the iWatch and the recently rumoured HealthBook app for iOS 8.

Lamego spent eight years working at Cercacor, a company which specialises in medical devices that can monitor human functions in a non–invasive way.

He helped develop the Pronto 7, a device which measures oxygen levels and pulse rate.

The iWatch is expected to be able to track such signs, as well as deliver other key information when hooked up to the HealthBook app.

The smartwatch will most likely launch at the end of this year, with iOS 8 being trailed at WWDC over the summer.
