MWC 2014: BlackBerry Classic confirmed

BlackBerry will release a new phone with a physical keyboard later this year, the company’s interim CEO John Chen confirmed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) today.

Dubbed the BlackBerry Classic, the device will have the same ‘tool belt’ design as the mobile-maker’s older phones. Word is it’ll land alongside a new version of BlackBerry’s Enterprise Server.

While the company has used MWC to show off its new Z3 handset, this news is bound to grab more headlines. The decision to ditch physical keyboards was seen as one of the key reasons behind the Canadian giant’s boardroom turmoil last year.

BlackBerry will need the device to sell impressively if it’s stem the tide of losses that it’s suffered relentlessly in recent years.

Chen is banking on keyboard warriors ditching their touchscreen phones for something more robust, a move which could yet backfire.
