Samsung Galaxy S5: livestream invite hints at fitness smarts and revamped UI

Samsung appears to have rubber-stamped rumours that its next Galaxy S smartphone will feature a rethought user interface and homescreen, as the tech world marks time until the handset’s debut on February 24th.

Posted on Samsung Mobile’s official global Twitter account, a virtual flyer for a livefeed of the Galaxy S5's launch event features what appear to be redesigned icons for a fresh take on Samsung’s TouchWiz Android custom skin.

A cursory look at the invite strongly hints that we’re in for a ‘flatter’ look this time. One that's not a million miles from iOS 7 and does away with the 3D effect that Samsung favoured previously. There’s also more than a hint of the Windows Phone about the icons, especially the way they recall airport signage and road signs.

As for the selection of icons, what do they tell us? Well, the fact that prominent among them is one trailing the S5’s ‘social’ smarts could be read as more than a sign that new social networking features are on the way.

It may also corroborate leaked images of Samsung’s revamped homescreen that reveal an HTC BlinkFeed-style layout where rows of apps are replaced by photos and live updates from social sites and services.

Samsung’s decision to highlight fitness and privacy apps suggests these will be core selling points too. The former is likely to tie in with the Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch that’s also expected to debut at the S5 launch event at Mobile World Congress.

The privacy icon, meanwhile, could be ballast for speculation that the tech giant will take a(nother) leaf out of Apple’s book and introduce a fingerprint scanner to keep sensitive data away out of the wrong hands.

News from the Galaxy S5 rumour vortex comes amid separate speculation that this year Samsung’s flagship phone will swap its trad plastic build for a metal frame. It’s also expected to pack an improved 16-megapixel camera and slightly larger screen.
