Sony has confirmed it has started rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat to its Xperia Z, Z1, and Z1 Compact smartphones. The latest version of Google’s platform is also being supplemented by a slew of proprietary software changes.

Sony says updating to Android 4.4 will improve the devices’ performance and overall user interface.

It also means Google’s excellent voice control software will be ready to roll on all three Xperia handsets and brings with it snappier multitasking and a much–improved phone app.

On top of those core changes, Sony says it’s also tweaked the overall look of its handsets' software to bring it in line with its PS4 console.

The Status Bar and Quick Settings apps have also been given a tidy up, alongside Track ID, Sony Select and Smart Social Camera.

Interestingly, Sony has confirmed that a number of older handsets and tablets will be feeling the Android love in months to come too.

The Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet Z will all be getting an update in the middle of Q2, according to the phone-maker.

The T2, E1 and M2 will also be getting bumped in due course, suggesting Sony is keen to sidestep any concerns about fragmentation among its Android portfolio.
