Three's Chief Executive Officer David Dyson has defended introducing a tethering cap on the revamped One plan, amid criticism from heavy data users on forums.
The carrier, whose tethering policy has over the years been notably looser and more generous than some of its larger rivals, brought in the cap, along with the consolation of free 0800 calls and a free upgrade to 4G, earlier this month.
The cap of 2GB applies solely to new customers, with existing subscribers on the One plan retaining unfettered tethering.
Three's tariff refresh will also see the One plan relegated to a SIM only contract. It will no longer be offered with handsets.
However, despite an adverse reaction from some tech fans, Dyson announced Three has no plans of changing its policy or raising the cap.
He said: "The tethering cap is really just a part of finding the right balance.
"There is a small number of customers that absolutely value that tethering, but we have to consider the broader customer group.
"Yes, we've seen the feedback. We sort of expected we'd get that feedback from a small group of customers, but we still feel it's the right thing to do."
Dyson added: “We are still very much focussed on making sure that our customers get a great data experience.
"We feel the One Plan, SIM Only will stay around for a while, with its recent price rise that might now be seen as a factor, in covering the unlimited tethering cost."
