Google demands ‘Powered by Android’ logo on all new phones

All new phones using Google Android must now have a certified ‘Powered by Android’ logo on their splash screen. That’s according to inside sources, which say that Google is at last clamping down on how manufacturers use its operating system.

The new logo only needs to appear at the bottom of the screen when a device starts up. But without it, manufacturers will not be entitled to use Google Mobile Services. That means no Gmail, Maps, Play Store and other Google–specific apps.

The move comes after Google was reportedly furious with Samsung for tweaking its OS massively with the release of its Note Pro tablet, pushing its services to one side.

The new HTC One (M8) and Samsung Galaxy S5 feature this new Android logo and all updated handsets using the OS are expected to follow suit.

As Google clamps down on fragmentation, this move may at last bring an end to kit with excessive bloatware and proprietary features which consumers do not want.
