Google Glass primed for Android KitKat

Google Glass looks set to make the jump to Android 4.4 KitKat, amid speculation that the team behind the smart specs ditched its previous monthly update schedule at the end of 2013 and will now focus on making major software improvements.

Currently, Google Glass uses the relatively old Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) iteration of Android, meaning it can’t take advantage of the platform's newer features.

Not least among these is better voice recognition, as well as improved battery life and fitness–focused apps, all of which have since been brought to Android via fresher iterations of the OS.

Glass engineer Teresa Zazenski said the update would make the software "smoother and just plain better".

At the moment, Google Glass is only available to those signed up to its ‘Explorer’ programme, although this has been extended to include friends and family of those who already use the device.

While Google has yet to confirm a release date, the hope is that its techno eyewear will see a commercial launch later in 2014.
