HTC has lifted the lid on a new Desire-branded, low-cost handset, as it banks on its ageing brand to help it reverse last year’s weak showing in the smartphone market.

Dubbed the Desire 310, the mid-range smartie's spec sheet takes in a 4.5-inch 854 x 480 resolution display, a quad-core processor and the latest version of HTC’s BlinkFeed news and social networking-focussed Android custom skin.

Perhaps the key feature thereof is Video Highlights, which turns owners clips and snaps into a showreel of their [affects Davina McCall voice] ‘best bits’.

There’s also five-megapixel snapper. And in keeping with the anticipated price point of the handset, there’s dual SIM support and an Offline Reading mode too.

This lets users view up to 20,000 articles served up by BlinkFeed without having to be connected to the internet, which ought to be a boon for cost-conscious consumers on limited data plans.

Peter Chou, HTC CEO, said: “Everybody today wants a smartphone that can keep up with them, regardless of whether it is a flagship or entry-level mode.

“The latest addition to our renowned HTC Desire range combines super-fast processing and premium features at a lower price, offering users the best possible experience in this category.”

Other features take in 4GB of internal storage with microSD support, a 2000mAh battery and a secondary 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

Priced £130 SIM-free, the Desire 310 is set to go on sale at O2, Vodafone and Carphone Warehouse soon.
