HTC One M8 launches with twin lens camera and 5-inch FHD screen

HTC has outed a smartphone challenger to the Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5, as the gadget-maker bids to turn around its ailing fortunes.

Dubbed the HTC One (M8) and not the All New One as rumours suggested, the handset doesn’t deviate too much from last year's One in the looks department and sports a very similar design and build.

The two most obvious differences are the new smartie's larger 5-inch FHD (1080p) screen and the two lenses on the rear, called Duo Camera.

This allows for more 'depth' with your snaps, with the option to change focus of photos after they’ve been shot.

The camera is, however, still based around the 4.1-megapixel 'UltraPixel' sensor, which HTC claims produces industry-leading results in low light conditions.

As you’d expect from a hot-from-the-production line smartie, the One M8 runs Android KitKat out of the box.

Slathered over the top of Google’s OS is the new HTC Sense 6.0 and its familiar Blinkfeed interface, which is similar to the Windows Phone live-titles only with dynamic news/breaking articles and social networking updates.

HTC's latest effort also retains the front-facing stereo speakers that were its predecessor's USP. This time around, though, they’re 25% louder and have ditched Beats Audio branding.

Rounding off the spec sheet is a quad-core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU, with 2GB of RAM.

Internal storage comes in at 16GB. That's down from 32GB (HTC One, 2013), only there's now a microSD slot that offers support for cards of up to 128GB.

Would-be buyers can pre-order the handset today on a range of UK carriers, ahead of its official street date.
