iOS 8 to bring massively improved Siri with better third-party app support

Apple is bringing enhanced voice commands to iDevices with the next version of its operating system, rumours suggest, presumably in the hope that broader functionality could transform Siri from a little-used novelty to a key feature of its gadgets.

According to tech site The Information (sounds very definitive, no?), the next version of Siri will be integrated much closely with third-party apps, where a host of restrictions currently apply.

So while Siri in its existing form enables users to book restaurants through OpenTable, right now this is restricted to a handful of appications and can only happen when Apple works directly with said apps' developers.

Apple also reserves the functionality for companies with whom it has struck financial arrangements.

The change in access for devs could result in third-party messaging apps that allow users to compose missives using their voice as they can with iMessage and book a larger range of services, such as flights.

Talk of opening up Siri comes ahead of the launch of the iWatch, where the device’s smaller screen would make the case for using a voice commands service seem much more compelling for users.

Siri is already much improved from its early incarnation when it was savaged by tech scribes for its shortcomings in a way we wouldn’t see again until the arrival of Apple Maps.

Google is believed to be toiling hard to improve its own Google Now voice app, while voice commands are reportedly landing on Window Phone handsets later this year.
