Apple has struck a deal with song recognition tool Shazam, which will see the best–selling app built into iOS. ‘Two people with knowledge of the product’ have told Bloomberg it will be similar to the full scale iOS integration enjoyed by Twitter and Facebook.
Users will be able to ask Siri what song is playing at any given time before getting the results on screen. It’s likely it will also come with option to purchase the track from the iTunes music store.
Apple is looking for ways to bolster music sales in iTunes, after they fell for the first time last year following a decade’s worth of steady growth. The popularity of Spotify and Pandora, plus the failure of iTunes Radio to make a mark, mean this Shazam tie–up could prove vital to Cupertino’s ongoing music business.
Details of the deal are likely to be revealed at Apple’s WWDC event, which kicks off on June 2 in San Francisco. Tim Cook is expected to reveal iOS 8 during his opening keynote speech.
