iPhone 6: Larger 5.5–inch model on hold, claim sources

Apple looks set to hold back the release of its 5.5–inch iPhone 6 owing to problems with the touch-panel technology it wants to use for the screen, rumours suggest. The smaller, 4.7–inch model, however, remains on course for an autumn launch.

Speaking to Reuters, supply-chain sources claimed that manufacturers are finding it harder to include Apple’s in–cell touch tech in the larger handset.

This technology has been used by Apple since the iPhone 5 and allows its devices to be much thinner than the competition.

These issues mean that Apple has pushed back mass production of the 5.5–inch handset. However, lines are apparently due to begin rolling for the 4.7–inch model in May, with Sharp, LG and Japan Display all chipping in.

This latest report tallies with analyst claims last week that Apple is facing problems with the 5.5–inch device.

If they turn out to be true, it could be a blow for Tim Cook and co, as the Cupertino company looks to take on Samsung and other key rivals, whose ever–growing handsets are hugely popular with consumers.
