Microsoft Office for iPad hits 12 million downloads in a week

Microsoft has revealed its suite of Office for iPad apps have been downloaded a massive 12 million times since they launched last week.

That number covers the Big M's Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote apps. It also proves that while rival productivity suites, such as Apple’s iWork and Google Drive, are popular, users simply cannot get enough of Microsoft's ubiquitous work tools.

There is, however, one glaring problem with the numbers.

Microsoft hasn’t revealed how many of those users have also got, or signed up for, an Office 365 subscription. Without one, the Office for iPad apps are read-only and essentially useless for creating and editing documents.

When quizzed about how many subscribers were using the service, Microsoft simply said it was ‘extremely pleased’ with the number of downloads. Hardly enlightening stuff.

However, the news will be seen as a welcome boost for new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

His decision to release Office for iPad appears to have been vindicated, especially after years of prevaricating by his predecessor Steve Ballmer, who felt the suite would hamper sales of Microsoft’s own tablets.
