Apple and Motorola settle patent dispute

Apple and Motorola have settled their longstanding patent battle, with the two titans of the mobile world agreeing to work together on patent reform.

A joint statement, issued by Apple and Google, which is in the process of selling Motorola to Lenovo, said: “Apple and Google have agreed to dismiss all the current lawsuits that exist directly between the two companies.

“Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform. The agreement does not include a cross license.”

The deal between the two should see strong moves made against so-called patent trolls, who buy old patents and use shell companies to licence them for exorbitant fees.

The move brings an end to 20 lawsuits in the U.S. and Germany. But while it does mean an end to this front of the wide-ranging patents wars, this move does not cover Apple’s battle with Samsung and patents used in its Google-powered Galaxy devices.

However, it is likely to cause rumblings among tech-watchers, with many suggesting this could be the beginning of a truce between Apple and its Korean rival.
