iOS 8: Apple bringing split screen multitasking to iPad

Apple is set to bring a new split-screen multitasking function to iOS 8, designed exclusively with the iPad in mind.

The plans, revealed by 9to5mac after speaking with ‘sources with knowledge of the enhancement in development’, mean that users will be able to open and use two apps at once.

Word is that Apple is looking into the idea of apps used in split-screen mode being able to interact with each other. That could mean dragging text and images between add-ons, with developers set to be given the tools to create even richer interactions.

Apple appears to be taking inspiration from Microsoft Surface, which already allows users to open and use multiple apps on one screen.

The change is only set to work in landscape mode on the iPad and should be revealed when iOS 8 gets its official unveiling at WWDC at the start of June.
