iPhone 6 video: dummy smartphone gets compared to HTC One M8 and Moto X

A comprehensive video of a dummy version of the iPhone 6 may have given us our clearest view yet of just how Apple’s next-gen smartphone stacks up against the Android competition.

In a clip from blogger MKBHD, a mock-up of the 4.7-inch edition of the handset based on case designs used by third-party manufacturers is compared to HTC’s latest flagship One M8. And goes up against the Moto X and iPhone 5S to boot.

Side-by-side with the One M8, it’s notable that, with its rounded edges and stripe-adorned aluminium rearplate, someone at Apple seems to have been taking notes from the award-winning designs that feature in HTC’s flagship phone.

As the presenter remarks, it’s also of note just how large the bezel [that’s the strip around the screen) is on the iPhone 6 compared with the One M8 and Moto X, which features comparable screen dimensions. And how much taller it is than those handsets too.

Where Apple’s forthcoming wonderkit does appear to score against its rivals, though, is in just how slim it is. At just 6mm thin, it’s positively tiny next to the gym-honed buffness of the One M8.

Other than that, this dummy also features a repositioned power button. As testified to in countless leaks from Apple’s supply chain, this has apparently moved from the top right of the handset to the side.

Present and correct too is the physical home button, which Apple is sticking with steadfastly despite other phone-makers appearing to move away from traditional pressers to make way for larger screens.

Whether this year’s changes to the iPhone will be enough to tempt consumers away from the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Note range is a moot point. But with the iPhone 6 expected to tip up in September, it looks like we’ll find out soon enough.
