Apple iWatch: 2.5–inch screen and wireless charging planned

Apple’s iWatch will have a 2.5–inch screen and will be launched as soon as early October. That’s the word from Reuters, which has spoken to ‘a source familiar with the matter’.

The screen size comes as a surprise, especially as recent reports from usually on–the–money analysts, such as Ming Chi–Kuo, have claimed that Apple is readying two models with 1.3-inch and 1.6–inch displays.

Word is that Taiwan’s Quanta Computer will begin mass production of the iWatch in July, with LG as the exclusive screen supplier.

The watch will have a slightly protruding face, pack touchscreen smarts and utilise wireless charging.

It’s believed the iWatch will need to be paired with an iOS device in order to handle messaging and calls, meaning it won’t work as a standalone device.

As expected, fitness tracking is set to be a key focus, with Apple said to be including a heart rate monitor.

This dovetails with Apple’s recently revealed plans for its new Health app, which will form a key plank of its forthcoming iOS 8 update.

The source reckons Apple is hoping to shift a massive 50 million units of the iWatch in its first year on sale. That would make it by far the most popular smartwatch on the market.
