BlackBerry launches BBM Protected

BlackBerry has revealed a new version of its BBM instant messaging platform designed specifically for business customers. Dubbed BBM Protected, it promises to allow users to speedily send missives and files without any security fears.

The freshly unveiled service is the first part of the phone-maker's eBBM suite of services, revealed earlier this year.

The new platform will form part of secure users’ existing BBM app, with BlackBerry keen to stress there’s no need to download a new OS in order for it to play nice.

BlackBerry owners with devices packing BlackBerry OS 6 and higher, including BB10, will be able to get on board.

Of course, these handsets will need to use BlackBerry Enterprise Server, meaning BBM Protected is only available to punters who are given their phones through work.

There’s no word yet on plans for an iOS or Android version. But with BBM already a huge success on both platforms, expect to see a release later this year.
