Google has released the Android L operating system to developers, just days after it lifted the lid on the fresh software at the I/O conference in San Francisco.

The OS is only currently available on last year’s Nexus 5 and the Wi-Fi-only edition of the 2013 Nexus 7.

The Big G has been quick to warn that this early version is unstable and is still very much in beta phase.

Unlike iOS 8, which developers can only download and access if they're registered with Apple, Android L is up for grabs for anyone with the correct devices.

However, Google has said it could potentially harm system settings and that while the option to roll back to a previous version of Android is available, it will cause all data to be wiped.

The new look Android uses Google’s ‘Material Design’ theme to deliver a honed and more design–savvy experience than previous iterations.

Google has also promised improved notifications and 5,000 APIs for developers to tinker with. A release date for the final version of Android L is expected at the end of 2014.
