iWatch: Production ramping up ahead of September launch

Apple’s iWatch is due to enter full production later this month, reports suggest, ahead of a planned launch in September alongside Apple’s new iPhone 6 models.

The claim comes courtesy of analyst Brian White of Cantor Fitzgerald, whose track record is a tad patchy but is notable for including the first reveal that Apple was bringing colour options to the iPhone range with its last-gen handsets.

In an investor note, he told his clients: “Our meeting with a tech supply chain company highlighted that initial production of certain “iWatch” components is scheduled to begin later this month and there are plans for a sharp acceleration into fall.”

White goes on to say that he believes the iWatch to be a ‘companion device’ and that therefore it makes sense for it to be shown off at the same time as the new iPhone.

He also says there will be numerous versions of the iWatch, in the same way Apple offers 4G and extra storage at a higher cost with the iPad. This tallies with previous chatter about the device.

Apple is expected to give the iWatch a major push in the autumn, having unveiled a number of smart proximity tools at its WWDC event in San Francisco which could dovetail with the device.
