Tesco Mobile customers can make overseas calls for a fraction of the outlay, with the launch of the supermarket-turned-carrier's international Calling Card app.
Available to download for free now for Android and iPhone, the application trims call costs to foreign countries to a minimum rate of 2p per minute.
As with Skype, it works by allowing Tesco Mobile customers to make the calls over the internet using Wi-Fi.
In so doing, they’re able to sidestep ruinous roaming charges and are charged the same rates they’d pay at home.
Tesco claims that a call from Brazil to the UK for 30 minutes would cost just 60p with international Calling Card. Were you to make that call in one of Brazil’s best known hotels, you’d be looking at an outlay of over £60.
Calling home for the same duration from Spain would work out at 30p when Card Calling is used, compared with the best part of £15 if you used the landline phone in a prestigious hotel on the Costa Del Sol.
Conversely, making an overseas call from the UK to an overseas location features a rate of 1p per minute. And better yet, app-to-app calls with other Tesco app users are completely free, as is messaging.
A Tesco spokesperson said: "The new app offers an even more convenient and cost effective way to keep in touch with loved ones over the summer, whether that be from the sun lounger to back home, or from the sofa in the UK to family living overseas.”
Tesco customers get £1 of international Calling Card credit when they download the app and £2 when they persuade a friend to get on board.
