iPhone 6 production starting this month

Apple is beginning mass production of the 4.7–inch iPhone 6 this month, with the larger 5.5–inch model rolling off production lines from August. That’s the word from Reuters, which says it’s had word from local media about the tech giant's plans.

The smaller model is entering production next week, according to insiders. It'll be followed by the more capacious version in the second week of August. Foxconn is set to assemble both devices on Apple's behalf.

The controversial Chinese company is also set to take on an extra 100,000 staff, as the launch date of the two handsets looms.

There was no word on whether the two iPhone 6 models would launch together, or if Apple was planning to release the larger phone later in the year, or even in 2015, owing to issues with mass producing sapphire displays.

A launch event for at least one of the iPhone 6 iterations is expected to take place during September.
