Samsung Galaxy Apps store heading to Android phones

Samsung is set to rebrand its Android–based app store. The rejigged offering, called Galaxy Apps, is set to feature on all Samsung smartphones using Google’s operating system.

Although the store will sell many apps found on Google’s Play Store, which is also included on all Galaxy handsets, it’ll have a specific ‘For Galaxy’ section too.

These add–ons will be made for Samsung devices only and harness the Korean company’s development tools.

Until now, Samsung’s proprietary apps store has been pushed to the background, with Google’s effort taking centre stage.

With on board Google services having been a hard-and-fast requirement for devices using Android from year dot, it seems Samsung is struggling to push its own software as an alternative.

Galaxy users should keep an eye out for Galaxy Apps over the next few days, with the rollout reportedly already underway.

Whether Samsung can gain an edge on Google and become a real player in the app economy remains to be seen, but the odds are certainly stacked against it.
