Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini gets official, retains fingeprint scanner

Samsung has finally officially outed the Mini variant of its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone, in news that won’t surprise anyone who pays attention to the phone-maker’s policy of covering all bases with its handset range.

The Galaxy S5 Mini’s major point of difference from its bigger stablemate is its 4.5-inch Super AMOLED, 1280×720 pixel display in place of the standard S5’s 5.1-inch 1080 x 1920 pixel number.

An eight-megapixel snapper also stands in for the top-of-the-range Galaxy S5’s 16-megapixel camera and a lower power 2,100 mAh battery does its best to fill in for the bigger kit’s beefy 2,800mAh cell.

Present and correct, though, are most of the S5’s software adornments, including the Ultra Power Saving Mode, a slew of fitness monitoring tools and Samsung’s much-maligned take on Touch ID-style fingerprint security.

Completing the spec sheet highlights are Quad Core 1.4 GHz processor, Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, 4G LTE support and an IP67 certification for dust and water resistance.

The phone will debut in Russia later this month and will come to the UK in a choice of Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold “in due course”.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed. But expect to pick one up free on a two-year contract from about £30 per month.
