EE to boost 4G speeds to 300Mbps, confirms will offer Samsung Galaxy Alpha

EE is to boost maximum speeds on its 4G network in central London to a whopping 300Mbps this year, with a network upgrade to next-generation Cat6 technology.

EE’s upgrade would mean its network offers mobile internet speeds that are double the UK’s fastest commercially available fibre optic home broadband service. They’re also double EE’s current top-end 150Mbps LTE-Advanced 4G service.

The carrier plans to implement Cat6 in the area inside the M25 the second half of 2015, with Manchester and Birmingham among those expected to be next in line for the service.

The first Cat6-capable phone to land on the network will be the just-announced Samsung Galaxy Alpha, which is set to go on sale in September.

An EE spokesperson told our sister site Omio: “We’re currently working across central London to enable hundreds of sites with the 2.6GHz spectrum that will form the second layer of our network for LTE-Advanced.”

“We will be making the network live in London this year as planned, and then any CAT6 device will be able to connect and get our best speeds.”

EE has yet to confirm whether customers will pay extra for the 300Mbps service. However, given the two-tier policy it currently operates it seems likely.

As it stands, EE customers on standard 4G plans get speeds of up to 30Mpbs, with higher prices applying for plans that offer faster connections.
