Vodafone has fired what appears to be an early broadside at rival carriers in the battle for iPhone 6 customers, as we count down the hours to the phone’s big reveal later today.
Clues as to Voda’s pricing plans stem from a missive from a PR agency affiliated to the carrier, which appears to drop a heavy hint about the network’s plans to sweeten its 4G contracts for the iPhone 6.
The missive confirms that from September 12th, Vodafone will offer ‘double content to customers signing up to 4G Red Xl or Red XXL plan on any smartphone”.
That means that as well as a six-month subscription to Neflix, they’ll also get choice of either Spotify or Sky Sports Mobile TV for the duration of their 24-month contract. This was announced elsewhere by Voda this morning.
But unlike Voda's official statement, the third-party PR agency's email adds a tantalising (possibly telltale) fresh bit of information.
The message doesn’t mention the iPhone 6 by name or specifically say that the incentive will be extended to Apple’s forthcoming handset (to do that would be to incur major heat from Cupertino, we'd have thought).
But it drops a heavy hint that’s the case when it notes that “given the expected news this evening, this [Vodafone's announcement] is most timely”.
In case you’ve been bunkering down off-grid in a remote cabin somewhere a la Bon Iver way back when, you’ll know that the ‘expected news’ being referred to here is the launch of the iPhone 6.
Apple is holding a press call tonight at 6pm UK time, which is sure to see the unveiling of two editions of its next-gen smartphone.
Vodafone has also confirmed that the offer will run until November 3rd. With the iPhone 6 expected to go on sale on the 19th. That means you’ll have around six weeks to take Voda up on its promotion.
The Red XL and XXL contracts offer unlimited calls, unlimited texts and feature some of Vodafone’s more generous data allowances.
For the first three months of the contract, they also offer unlimited data usage under Voda’s Test Drive scheme.
