Sony Z3 range of new devices all support PS4 gaming over Wi-Fi, bringing a feature that's long been a fixture of the PS4 Vita to Sony smartphones for the first time.
Support for PS4 gaming will land on Z3 devices via an update coming in November, allowing users to play their console favourites on a second screen.
At a Sony press event in London, the phone-maker disclosed that the feature works when the PS4 is turned on or in standby mode, but relies on a strong Wi-Fi signal.
Sony claims the feature is aimed squarely at gamers who are at home and will be a boon because it enables owners to carry on playing a game while freeing up the television for someone who wants to watch a TV programme.
Gamers will use the console’s Dual Shock 4 controller when playing on the Z3, with a so-called 'gaming mount' available that physically connects the Z3 smartphones to the controlpad.
Interestingly, although it was stressed that a good WIFI signal is needed, you don't need to be in the same place as the PS4.
"It is theoretically possible that I could play PlayStation 4 games, using my smartphone and Dual Shock Controller here", said Calum MacDougall, Head of Xperia Marketing.
"My PlayStation 4 could be at home; could be turned on or on standby and I could connect here, by a different WIFI and potentially reach my PlayStation 4, connect to it, and see the PlayStation 4 games here and play them right here.
"We don't recommend it and neither will we actively promote it. But we won't restrict consumers from trying it, if they want to do so."
MacDougall also hinted that Sony's PS4 gaming might be coming to other Xperia products in future.
