Carphone Warehouse’s iD network showed its hand today with 4G contracts winningly priced from £7.50 per month, as it bids to carve itself a niche UK mobile phone market.
Announced amid much fanfare last month, iD’s strategy hinges on “capped plans for the lowest price on the market” that it claims put an end to unexpectedly high bills.
The carrier has also heavily trailed roaming plans that it touted as covering “more European countries than anyone else”.
Today it has finally put some flesh on the bones of those claims by announcing price points for its contracts, all of which offer 4G as standard. And, in fairness, they’re actually very competitive indeed.
Leading the charge are the so-called ‘Shockproof’ plans, which are capped automatically to guard against bill shocks.
These start at £7.50 per month and feature a £5 per month buffer that users can tweak from month to month if they need a more generous allowance.
Travel-fanciers are catered for by iD's TakeAway roaming plans, which Carphone reckons offer more free roaming than any other plan in the UK and start at £25.50 per month over 24 months.
These include free roaming in 22 countries. That nudges TakeAway plans ahead of Three’s Feel at Home plan, which lets you roam free in 18 countries.
SIM only customers (there’s no fancy name here. They’re just called 'SIM only') can choose from data only plans from £5 per month. Or there are more conventional plans that include texts, calls and data and start at £7.50 per month.
All SIM only plans run over 30 days on a rolling contract basis. But perhaps the pick of the bunch is priced £20 per month.
That gets you unlimited data, as well as 2,000 minutes and 5,000 texts per month.
Completing the line-up are ‘Go To’ plans, which are aimed at data-hungry consumers. Isn't that everyone these days?
Choose a 12-month plan and you’ll pay from £13.50 per month. Go for a 24-month plan and the entry-level price is £11.50 per month.
Graham Stapleton, UK CEO at Carphone Warehouse, said: “iD gives increased flexibility and value to customers who are getting increasingly frustrated with the ‘one size fits all’ approach.
“Launching with a range of plans - including 12 and 24 month contracts alongside 30 day options - means we can offer solutions based on how customers actually use their mobile phone.”
iD is also running monthly promotions on select handsets. The first of these is on the Samsung A3, which is being proffered for £19.50 per month.
This includes monthly allowances of 300 mins, 5000 texts and 1 GB of 4G data.
