Sony's Xperia Z5 is due to hit the shelves in November with the first-ever 4K screen on a smartphone. But there’s been no official word on plans for a 4K tablet.
At Mobile World Congress earlier this year Sony lifted the lid on a tablet with a 2K display in the shape of the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet, but we have now moved on to the Z5 series.
At the launch event for the Z5 range uSwitch asked the Senior Product Manager for Sony Mobile Jun Makino, will you be bringing 4K screens to tablets?
"We are looking at every innovation in different devices", he said.
"We can't really comment on that feature.”
That isn't a categorical denial and the company is already established in the 4K TV screen market, with aspects of its tech being brought into the Xperia Z5 Premium.
Sony now has a chance to beat the competition to the punch and lead the way, ahead of the likes of Samsung and Apple.
Perhaps, it’s ironing out the bugs and teething troubles of 4K on a smaller screen, and biding its time for when the market is ripe.
Our money is on Las Vegas' CES for the big announcement of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium Tablet.
If Sony leaves it much later, its branding system could be out of sync, with a Xperia Z6 phone on the cards that year alongside a tablet stuck with last-gen ‘Z5’ branding.
