Facebook has admitted that its iOS app is causing excessive battery drain on iPhones. The social network has said it is investigating the issue.
In a statement, the company said, “We have heard reports of some people experiencing battery issues with our iOS app. We’re looking into this and hope to have a fix in place soon.”
Facebook has not said exactly what the issue is that’s causing iPhone batteries to drain at a rapid rate. But a number of developers have blogged about the situation, with many claiming it is because the app continues to run in the background.
While this isn’t unusual for apps, it is a process which can be turned off. What’s caused consternation among users is the fact that it appears Facebook’s app keeps running even when background refresh is switched off.
Some claim the issue relates to automatic videos, with audio draining battery even when set to silent. Others believe it may be related to internet calling functionality, or the fact the app doesn’t ‘sleep’ as it should when users press the iPhone’s home button.
Facebook has not said when a fix will be forthcoming.
