Apple is working on a major software update for Mac computers that will allow iPhone-owners to unlock their desktop or laptop via their smartphone’s Touch ID button.

The new feature will apparently use Bluetooth to allow users to get into their Macs when their iPhone is in close proximity.

Word is that Apple may also be working on a tool that allows its Apple Watch to unlock a compatible Mac too.

It’s believed that the feature could be used to allow online purchases via Apple Pay.

iPhone-owners could authenticate their banking details via Touch ID while buying stuff on their Mac.

This wide ranging update is set to form part of Apple’s upcoming OS X 10.12 upgrade, which is set to be unveiled at the company’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco next month.

WWDC will also see Apple reveal its plans for iOS 10, which are thought to include a series of design tweaks, a beefed up Messages app and new dark mode to blacken the screen.
