Spotify says Apple Music has helped boost business

Apple’s major rival claims subscribers have boomed in past year.

Spotify’s subscriber base has grown faster and the service has added more users than ever since the launch of the rival Apple Music platform in June last year.

That’s according to the streaming service's vice president Jonathan Forster, who told Reuters that Apple’s competition forced Spotify to get better.

"It's great that Apple is in the game. They are definitely raising the profile of streaming. It is hard to build an industry on your own," said Forster.

"Since Apple Music started we've been growing quicker and adding more users than before."

Forster told Reuters that Spotify now has 30 million paying subscribers, taking its total user base to 100 million when including those who use the advert-supported, free version of the app and web player.

Apple currently has 13 million paying subscribers in 100 countries, with a rapid rate of growth despite poor reviews for the first version of its streaming app.

The Cupertino-based company is said to be plotting a major overhaul of its platform, with a new design and improved browsing smarts.

The update is set to be unveiled at its Worldwide Developer Conference, which starts on June 13th in San Francisco.
