Instagram has finally bowed to pressure and released an updated version of its iPhone app which allows users to share their images directly from their devices’ Photos app.

Until now, iPhone users had to open the Instagram app to upload pictures. But with this latest extension, they can share photos and even add captions without having to leave their image library.

Similar app extensions for Facebook, Twitter and Flickr have been available for some time.

The option to add app extensions has been available to developers since 2014, but it’s taken Facebook–owned Instagram some two years to come around to the idea.

However it's worth noting that, while obviously very welcome, the extension does not offer the complete set of Instagram features. Any filters or further edits must be done within the app.

Apple’s Photos does include limited editing functionality, as do a number of more powerful third-party tools such as camera app VSCO.

The latest edition of Instagram can be downloaded from the App Store now.

Look for version 8.2 to be sure that the extension comes as part of the wider update, which includes a number of other minor bug fixes.
