The forthcoming Galaxy S8 will not feature a standard, 3.5mm headphone slot, rumours suggest, with users instead being forced to connect wired earbuds via the device’s USB–C charging port.

That’s according to a report from Sam Mobile, known for its insider links at the Korean mobile-maker.

The news comes after Apple controversially ditched the headphone slot in the iPhone 7, with users instead plugging their headphones into the Lightning port that's usually reserved for charging.

The result is that iPhone 7 owners who want to use their existing headphones, instead of the in-box, official Apple ones, must attach an adaptor.

When Samsung unveiled its ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 over the summer, its executives publicly mocked Apple’s then-rumoured plans to remove the headphone port from its flagship smartphone.

Now, however, it seems as if Samsung going to follow suit.

Would-be Galaxy S8 buyers, though, are likely to be left fuming at the thought of having to either buy a special USB–C to 3.5mm adaptor or invest in a new set of Bluetooth headphones.

The decision could herald the end of the 3.5mm headphone slot, with other mobile-makers likely to follow the lead set by Apple and Samsung.

Samsung is said to be priming a new, more compact speaker for the Galaxy S7 and utilising the extra space to incorporate bigger battery.

The Galaxy S8 is due to launch at Mobile World Congress next February.
