The head of a company behind innovative wireless charging technology, whose products allows users to charge handsets and tablets over–the–air, has dropped the biggest hint yet that wireless charging will be a key feature of the iPhone 8.

Steve Rizzone, whose company Energous has just unveiled a series of new wireless charging products for the home and has long been rumoured to be working with Apple on the iPhone 8, spoke with reporters at the annual CES event in Las Vegas.

While he would not name Apple directly, Rizzone said Energous was working with “one of the largest consumer electronic companies in the world".

“I cannot tell you who it is,” he added. “But I can virtually guarantee that you have products from this company on your person, sitting on your desk, or at home.”

Energous’s product allows devices to be charged over–the–air from a distance of as much as 15 feet.

It was first unveiled at CES in 2015, with the company signing an exclusive deal with the unnamed tech giant a few weeks later.

Energous utilises special power units placed strategically around the home or office, potentially meaning users can charge their phones at all times when inside.

If WattUp does make it into the iPhone 8, it will put Apple’s phone at a huge advantage over its rivals.

Until now, wireless charging has tended to rely on charging plates, meaning devices could not be moved while powering up.

The iPhone 8 is expected to launch in autumn 2017, with a all–new design and improved dual lens camera.
