Facebook has confirmed that smartphones using Microsoft’s ageing Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 platforms will no longer work with its Messenger app.

In a message to owners of the old–school phones, Facebook stated: “We regret to inform you that since the end of March, the app version you’re using is no longer supported and you can not send and receive messages.

“To continue to send and receive messages from Facebook on your phone, update your Facebook app to the latest version.”

Facebook says it will still support Windows 10 products.

Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 have been superseded by Windows 10.

None of Microsoft’s smartphones have managed to win over consumers in large numbers and challenge the dominance of Apple’s iPhone and handsets using Google Android.

The tech giant was forced to write off its multi–billion purchase of Nokia’s device business after its Lumia range tanked in the face of stiff competition.
