Google Maps, eBay and Amazon no longer offer app support for the Apple Watch, suggesting the much-hyped wearable could be struggling for sales.
Eagle–eyed Apple watchers have noticed that the three major apps, all of which have been available since the Apple Watch launched two years ago, are now not available in the App Store.
Losing the ability to shop through Amazon and eBay on your wrist may not be a huge loss.
But Google’s decision to pull its app has repercussions for those looking to get from A to B using a service that’s less clunky than Apple’s own mapping service.
For its part, Google stated: "We removed Apple Watch support from our latest iOS release but expect to support it again in the future."
It could well be that Google is waiting for Apple to launch the Series 3 version of its Apple Watch, which is said to act as a standalone device, rather than requiring a connection to an iPhone.
However, the move by some of tech’s biggest names is unlikely to allay fears that the Apple Watch simply isn’t popular enough to warrant its own apps.
