Samsung Pay now available with HSBC, M&S and First Direct

HSBC, M&S Bank and First Direct customers can now use their cards with Samsung Pay, the Korean tech giants mobile wallet service.

It means that owners of compatible Galaxy handsets can pay for goods at contactless terminals using their smartphones’ fingerprint scanner for added security. Owners of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ can also authorise payments using their devices’ iris scanner.

The announcement comes as Samsung looks to expand its payment tool in the face of competition from Apple Pay and Google Wallet.

It means that Samsung has upped the number of its banking partners to six, with MBNA, Nationwide and Santander already on board. MasterCard and Visa have already confirmed support, with American Express to follow.

However, that still leaves high street names including Barclays, Halifax and Lloyds out of the loop, something Samsung will need to rectify if it wants to stay competitive.

Samsung Pay’s biggest edge on its rivals is its tie–up with Transport for London, which allows users of the capital’s travel network to nominate a ‘transport card’, allowing them tp tap in and out for journeys without having to wake their devices.
