LG set to make OLED screens for 2018 iPhones

LG looks set to become one of Apple’s main screen suppliers, with reports emerging that the Korean company will supply OLED panels for 2018’s iPhone range.

Apple is set to use the tech for the first time in this year’s iPhone 8, although the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models will only come with LCD screens, according to a variety of supply-chain sources.

Until recently, it had been thought that Samsung would be Apple’s sole OLED supplier.

Apple is believed to have ordered 160 million screens from its main rival, but appears to have grown concerned about becoming overly reliant on a company with which it has had sour relations in the past.

The deal with LG, reported by analyst Ming Chi Kuo, comes just days after stories emerged of Apple working on its own OLED screens at a special facility in Taiwan.

It’s thought Apple wants to develop the tech itself and then lease it to Asian suppliers who will make the screens on its behalf.

The long–awaited iPhone 8 should feature a bezel–free display with brightness to match the best Samsung smartphones.
