Apple plotting new AirPods for 2018

Apple is working on an updated version of its AirPods wireless headphones, with plans to launch the earbuds in late 2018.

That’s the word from Ming Chi Kuo, an Apple specialising analyst who regularly gets his predictions about the California company right.

Kuo says that the new AirPods will feature a new quartz component, but does not elaborate on any further features. Apple fans have long wanted the wireless headphones to offer full noise cancelling.

The news comes just days after it was revealed Apple has sold out of AirPods ahead of Christmas. The earphones are not available until late January, as owners of newer iPhones male the move from wired to wireless tech.

The iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, along with last year’s iPhone 7 range, don't come with a standard headphone slot, a move which Apple’s Phil Schiller said showed ‘courage’. While derided at the time, Schiller’s suggestion that analogue headphone tech was on its way out is proving true. Google and HTC are among rival mobile makers to drop the port in 2017.
