Spotify has begun trialling its own voice assistant in a direct challenge to similar services from Apple, Google and Amazon.
A small number of users have reported seeing a new microphone icon when opening the search tool within the Spotify app. By pressing it, they are then given a walkthrough of the new feature, before being prompted to try voice searches for albums, artists, songs and playlists.
Apple does not allow Spotify to access Siri, meaning the iPhone’s voice assistant cannot be used to cue up tracks.
This latest moves suggests Spotify is looking to bypass Apple (and Google) by creating its own version to work specifically with the streaming service.
In a brief statement, Spotify said, “We’re always working on improving the Spotify experience for our users, but we don’t have any information to share at this time.”
There is no word on when the service will be rolled out globally, or whether it will work on desktop versions as well as smartphone apps.
