Apple has changed its App Store policy guidelines to allow users to buy in–app purchases as gifts for fellow iPhone and iPad owners.
Until now, apps could be bought up front as gifts, but any in–app purchases had to be bought by the end user only.
However, with an increasing number of apps being offered for free initially before offering premium features as in–app purchases, Apple has had a much–needed change of heart.
In an official document, Apple said, "Apps may enable gifting of items that are eligible for in-app purchase to others. Such gifts may only be refunded to the original purchaser and may not be exchanged."
At the moment, apps can be gifted via a dedicated button within the App Store. Apple has not told developers how it plans to offer in–app purchases as gifts, with a new interface likely to help smooth the process.
