The Monmouthshire Building Society was originally named the Monmouthshire and South Wales Permanent Investment Benefit Building Society when it was founded in Newport, South Wales, in 1869. Over the years the Monmouthshire Building Society expanded, opening further branches in South Wales. It has also changed its name a few times, most recently in 1969.

Today the Monmouthshire Building Society has several branches and agencies along the M4 corridor in South Wales. It remains a mutual society and continues to support the local community. Monmouthshire Insurance Services is a subsidiary of Monmouthshire Building Society.
