About National Counties Building Society

The National Counties Building Society was founded in 1896. It was originally called the Fourth Post Office Mutual Society, but was then renamed as the National Counties Building Society in 1972. When the building society was first formed, its membership was limited to Post Office workers. From 1972 onwards, the society relaxed its membership rules and anyone could join. In 2014, the society launched the Family Building Society, a subsidiary designed to offer a greater number of financial products and services for its members.

Today the National Counties Building Society is largely an online-based society, with just one branch in Epsom. National Counties customers can select from a range of different products, including savings accounts, mortgages, and insurance policies.

National Counties BS mortgages are available for first time buyers, existing homeowners, and landlords. They also have a selection of mortgage products to cater for customers with specialist requirements.

Fixed rate and discounted rate National Counties BS mortgages are available for first time buyers, home movers, and customers wishing to re-mortgage in order to take advantage of a better deal. The maximum loan to value on any of these mortgages is 80%.

Discounted and fixed rate buy to let mortgages are suitable for landlords and property developers. The maximum loan to value on a National Counties BS mortgage for buy to let purposes is 65%. Buy to let mortgages from the National Counties cannot be used for HMOs.

There are National Counties BS mortgages available for customers with specialist requirements. These include expatriate mortgages, holiday home mortgages, armed forces mortgages and loans for customers wishing to buy a second home.

Existing customers can apply to borrow more from the National Counties Building Society. Existing customers can also take a National Counties mortgage with them when they move home.
