The X-Files

The X-Files is a very popular, long-running American TV series from the ‘90s focusing on two FBI agents (Mulder and Scully) who investigated the so-called ‘X-Files’: unsolved cases that are too weird for the FBI to solve, usually involving aliens. The series ran for nine years before cancelation, although it was recently brought back for a 10th series and they’re currently filming a new series. All 10 series are available on Amazon Prime.

Horror films to stream

Don't have time to dedicate to watching an entire scary series? Check out our picks for the top horror films available to stream now.

Gerald’s Game

This year has been the year of Stephen King adaptations. Gerald’s Game is less well-known than some of the other recent films and TV series, but it’s arrived on Netflix at the perfect time. Although it starts off as a slow burn, you’ll be rewarded with one of the grizzliest, goriest scenes ever put on film if you stick with it until the end.

It Follows

Watch It Follows on Netflix

It Follows is one of the smartest modern horror flicks out there. This film is more of a psychological thriller and is less gory or outright scary than some of the others — but that doesn’t mean it won’t stick around in your head for a while. It Follows is currently streaming on Netflix.

Annabelle

If you’ve seen The Conjuring, you already know who Annabelle is. This film is a prequel to The Conjuring and tells the full story of Annabelle, the evil doll possessed by a demon. The film is allegedly based on a real story, but we’re sure it’s been embellished quite a bit. Check it out on Amazon Prime.

The classic horror comedy An American Werewolf in London is also available on Amazon Prime. The film follows two friends on a backpacking holiday in England, one of whom ends up turning into a werewolf — all of which is implied in the title of the film. Although a bit dated now, the special effects and make-up still hold up.

Halloween films for kids

If your kids love Halloween but aren’t old enough to handle the above films, we’ve highlighted our picks for kids to get in the Halloween spirit without getting any nightmares.

Hotel Transylvania

This animated film stars Dracula as the owner of a hotel for monsters. Visitors like werewolves, mummies and Frankenstein’s monster — or Frank, as he goes by in this film — stay at the hotel to get a respite from scaring civilians. The hotel is supposed to be human-free, but a human comes to visit, which Dracula has to keep secret (and prevent his daughter from falling in love with him as well) or else his hotel would go out of business. The film is available on Netflix.
