A new four-part drama about the life of celebrated James Bond creator Ian Fleming is coming to Sky Atlantic in February, with Captain America's Dominic Cooper starring in the lead role.

Ian Fleming's life story was almost as enthralling as the adventures of his most popular creation, with the author's real life exploits echoed in many of 007's missions throughout the course of the 14 novels and short story collections featuring Britain's greatest secret agent.

In Fleming, which begins on February 12th, viewers will gain an insight into what the man behind the pen was really like, with Cooper aiming to channel all of the flamboyancy, intelligence and love of fun and danger that Fleming's friends and family were used to seeing.

Set in the early 1940s, the programme sees the cast of characters facing the prospect of World War II, though Fleming seems more concerned about chasing women, collecting rare books and generally living a playboy lifestyle, funded by his family fortune.

Sibling rivalry plays a key part of the show, with Ian cast in the shadow of his brother Peter (played Rupert Evans), and proving a disappointment to his mother Eve (Lesley Manville).

His big break comes when he is recruited to to help in the effort against the Nazis and, with the help of sceptical Second Officer Monday (played by Bafta-nominee Anna Chancellor), Fleming proves adept at espionage.

What follows is the tale of how Fleming forged an impressive legacy as a spy and serial romancer, particularly when he encounters Lady Ann O'Neill (Sherlock's Lara Pulver) and a passionate affair shapes both their lives.

Directed by Mat Whitecross, who helmed the Bafta-nominated Road to Guantanamo and critically acclaimed Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Sky says customers can expect a real treat.

"Fleming captures both the opulence of high society London and the suspense and intrigue behind enemy lines. While Bond fans will spot many a nod to the legendary agent, the series is ultimately a gripping account of a playboy spy and the woman who won his heart," the broadcaster states.

Fleming is exclusive to Sky customers and debuts at 9pm on Sky Atlantic (channel 108) on February 12th, while also being available to download from Sky Go from February 5th.
